TYPES OF ROCK

⭐IGNEOUS
⭐SEDIMENTARY
⭐METAMORPHIC

Igneous
The word igneous means fire and is the oldest form of the earths development. Some of the more common igneous stone are granite, basalt, gabbro and lava. Without going into any detail about igneous stone some generalisations can be made. Igneous stone came from the solidification of hot, molten lava that was extruded through the earths surface or deposited below the earths surface. It is generally the harder and tougher stone of the three classifications. Its abrasiveness depends upon the amount of silica in, and the toughness of the stones composition. Usually the more violent volcanos had a higher content of silica. In summary these properties make igneous stone the best suited for the construction industry.
Sedimentary
During the ice age active glaciers moved across the earth and gouged great depressions into the surface. They also transported large quantities of stone and had a leveling effect on the irregular terrain.
The glaciers eventually melted and created lakes in the depressions. The settling of rock particles and lime bearing shells through the many ages created stratified deposits which are referred to as sedimentary deposits. These solidified deposits yield limestone, sandstone, shale and conglomerates.
Metamorphic
During the earths evolution metamorphic rock was formed by the compression and heat to which igneous and sedimentary rocks were subjected. Familiar names of metamorphic rocks are gneiss, slate, quartzite and marble.
